How to Can Mushrooms Without a Pressure Cooker

Magic mushrooms might have different uses because of their psychoactive effects. These are results of the psilocybin they contain, but they are still like any sort of mushrooms. People grow mushrooms in canning jars to keep them fresh for a long time. It’s also a way to make sure that they are kept away from any sort of bacteria that can affect their growth or contaminate them. But not everyone has a pressure cooker that makes it easier for you to can mushrooms. As such, we have prepared a guide on how to can mushroom without a pressure cooker.

What are mushrooms?

Strictly speaking, we are not talking about ordinary mushrooms here. We are talking about psilocybin mushrooms, which are a type of fungus that has a psychoactive effect because of how they contain a compound called psilocybin. Also called “shrooms” or “magic mushrooms”, psilocybin mushrooms are known to have a type of high that enhances the mood and brings about a euphoric sensation.

Shrooms also induce a state of heightened focus that can distort sensory perceptions to make the user more creative and imaginative. At times, magic mushrooms can also cause hallucinations in a way that is manageable.

Psilocybin mushrooms have been in use for thousands of years are area some of the most popular psychoactive substances in the world today. In the past, they were used mainly for religious ceremonies because the state that they induce placed users in a trance. It made them feel spiritually closer to the divine being. There are is also evidence that suggests that magic mushrooms were used for medicinal purposes as well.

Today, psilocybin mushrooms are just as almost just as popular as cannabis for recreational purposes. One of the biggest reasons for their popularity is the fact that they are all-natural and organic. As such, there is little to no risk of overdosing on mushrooms as opposed to synthetic substances. Furthermore, shrooms are not highly addictive. Finally, when you use shrooms on a short-term basis, your body will be quick to adjust to their effects and will be much more tolerant as long as your consumptions are not far apart from one another.

While mushrooms can be found in the wild depending on the strain, people cultivate them for commercial purposes nowadays. And one of the best ways to grow mushrooms for commercial purposes is to can them.

Why can mushrooms?

Canning is a good way to grow and preserve your magic mushrooms because it keeps them away from oxygen and other substances such as bacteria that can potentially prevent your spores from growing. After all, bacteria and mold can have serious effects on the health of your mushrooms. More importantly, canning mushrooms is a very sterile way for you to grow your magic mushrooms.

When canning mushrooms, it is also important for you to make sure that the canning jars you are using are sterile. That is because having bacteria or mold growing in the jars can prevent your mushrooms from growing. Or, if they end up growing, your mushrooms might end up being contaminated. As such, canning your mushrooms really does make things better. It not only preserves and ensures freshness but also keeps your mushrooms away from possible contamination.

What role does the pressure cooker play in this? Well, the heat and the pressure that comes from the pressure cooker allows you to sterilize the canning jars faster and much more efficiently so that you can be sure that they are free from bacteria. However, a pressure cooker is NOT an important part of canning your mushrooms. In fact, you can proceed with the canning with or without the pressure cooker.

You can use any ordinary pot when sterilizing your canning jars. A simple thing you can do is to use a really large pot and then put some sort of rack at the bottom so that you can place your jars in an elevated position at about an inch or two away from the bottom of the pot.

However, before you get to that point, the first thing you need to do is to WASH your canning jars. Make sure that there is no visible dirt inside the canning jars. However, do not towel dry them as you will only allow more germs to cultivate inside the canning jars. Also, you yourself should also wash to make sure that you have no germs on you.

For each canning jar (if you are using half-pint canning jars), add a quarter of a cup of brown rice and about a half of cup of bottled water for sterility. This forms a sort of substrate where your mushrooms will be given a nutrient-rich environment where they can grow properly. Place the canning jars in your pot and put enough water in the pot so that about a quarter of your canning jars are submerged.

Place the lids of the jars on top but make sure that the lids are loose. Do not stack the jars on top of one another. Place the lid on the pot and turn the heat on and bring the water to a boil. Do not cut your sterilization time short as this is the most important part of growing your mushrooms in canning jars. You may need to wait for about four hours for the sterilization process to be done especially if you are using half-pint canning jars.

After four hours have passed, turn your stove off but do not open the pot lid. This may cause the canning jars to crack. Let the pot cool a bit before opening them. After opening the lid, wait about 15 minutes more for the jars to cool before removing them from the pot. Leave the jars to cool out of the pot for about 2 to 4 hours. That is because having too much heat inside the jars can cause your spores to die.

Once the jars have cooled down, you can begin the inoculation process. You can use a spore print or a spore syringe for the inoculation process. If you are using a spore print, hold it over the top of the jar. Use a sterilized scalpel to gently tap and scrape the spores into the rice cake inside the jars. But if you are using a spore syringe, you can just simply inject the spores through the lid.

After you get the spores inside the jars, close the lid tightly and give it a shake so that the spores will spread throughout the jar until the rice cake inside breaks up. After this, put the jars in room temperature of about 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you store them in a dark place. You may have to wait about a week or so until you see the white mycelia. If you see any other color inside the jars, that is most likely mold. Discard any jars that cultivated mold.

During the fruiting period, it is important for your mushrooms to have about a couple of hours a day and a lot of humidity as well. Place them in a large plastic crate, bin or container. Place some soil inside the container and then put the rice cakes on the soil in a gentle manner. You can give them a bit of moisture by misting them with water.  They need a lot of humidity so make sure to regularly mist the container with water if you feel like the environment is not moist enough for them.

When everything goes right, it might take about more than a week for mushrooms to begin to grow. The rice cakes can continuously produce mushrooms for up to a month and a single rice cake can produce hundreds of these. This usually happens in waves so you better harvest the shrooms quickly and preserve them so that they will not rot pretty quickly.
