Microdosing Mushroom Chocolate: Complete Guide

New magic mushroom users are usually told to microdose or use microdosing but what is this? How do you micro-dose on something that’s too pleasurable as mushrooms?

The effects of psilocybin mushrooms have been studied for many years now and experts are amazed by this drug’s psychedelic effects. Some say that when shrooms are used moderately or in this case, micro-dosed, it can give you positive effects, even therapeutic effects.

But before we start discussing what microdosing is and why microdosing on mushroom chocolates is popular, we would just like to explain that this guide is an educational guide. We do not condone or promote the use of magic mushrooms.

If want to use magic mushrooms to help you with certain medical or mental conditions, talk to a professional. Never use shrooms unless you are prepared to experience it’s strong, psychedelic effects.

What is microdosing magic mushrooms?

Microdosing is consuming a drug in specific, sub-perceptual doses or amounts. This is commonly used in psychedelics such as magic mushrooms and LSD. You may also encounter microdosing in marijuana especially medical marijuana.

The term sub-perceptual simply means that the dose will initiate very subtle effects. Usually, people who use microdosing use sub-perceptual doses of shrooms or other psychedelics into their daily or weekly routine.

People who have used microdoses of shrooms have reported improved creativity, improved energy, enhanced focus, and enhanced relational capabilities. Some magic mushroom enthusiasts say that microdosing has enhanced their spiritual awareness and has stimulated all their senses. You can also find people who use microdoses of magic mushroom to treat conditions like anxiety, depression, and pain usually with impressive results.

Some studies regarding magic mushroom microdosing

The Beckley Foundation has started the push for the legal use of psilocybin mushrooms. This was supported by long-term good effects that were seen from studies on patients who were resistant to ordinary treatments for depression.

Just very recently, a city in California has decriminalized the use of plant medicines and this included the use of magic mushrooms. This bold move initiated Colorado’s referendum on decriminalizing psilocybin mushrooms as well.

There are studies regarding psychedelics that showed that psychedelics like psilocybin mushroom may have positive effects on anxiety and mood problems.

Another research was done in  John Hopkins and has concluded that addictions like smoking may be treated with magic mushrooms. The researchers said that their respondents have reported 80 percent abstinence while a group of chronic smokers also should abstinence in the context of the use of cognitive-behavioral treatments.

And aside from mental conditions, magic mushrooms have been known to treat physical conditions such as cluster headaches. Shrooms and LSD may have the same effect as conventional treatments for cluster headaches. Those who take shrooms regularly have reported enhanced periods of remission.

So with all these good features, experts say that there is a good reason to support the use of microdosing in magic mushrooms.

Why microdose with mushroom chocolates?

Magic mushrooms may be incorporated in any food item and the most commonly used is chocolate. Why chocolate? This food item is easy to use. Simply melt chocolate in the microwave or a turbo broiler and add chopped magic shrooms to the mix.

Pour this to mold or an ice cube tray and freeze this. In just about an hour, you’ll have psychedelic chocolates. And because you can divide a chocolate bar into smaller pieces or make bite-sized portions, then you can use this to microdose.

And chocolates come in different delicious flavors. You can add magic shrooms to dark chocolate, white chocolate or milk chocolate. Aside from the kind of chocolate, you may also add other ingredients to the mix.

Mushrooms will work well with nuts, dried fruits, and fresh fruits. You can use chocolates to make cookies, brownies, cakes, and pies. We will discuss how to microdose with shrooms and chocolates later in this article.

When did microdosing start?

Despite the use of psychedelic mushrooms dating back centuries, the modern history of shrooms dates back the 1950s where psychedelics were the craze. It was during this time when the interest in micro-dosing showed renewal especially when Dr. James Fadiman published “The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys back in 2011.

This book focused on microdosing and classified this as a subculture of psychedelic usage. Several native cultures and modern folks used micro-dosing to bring about some good benefits from magic mushrooms. Dr. Fadiman used the term “microdosing” in his book and this was immediately adapted by mainstream psychedelic users.

And aside from introducing the term microdosing, the book also stirred the curiosity as well as the imagination of so many people. Most were amazed by the reports of people who have successfully used microdosing. Fadiman’s book also focused on practical techniques on microdosing for people who want to try this technique.

Fadiman’s research on microdosing is one of the many modern studies regarding the process of microdosing. Most research is focused on the use of larger doses made for specific medicinal outcomes.

The next major update in microdosing was from an interview by Dr. Fadiman. This was a podcast with Tim Ferris in 2015.  Ferris authored “The Four Hour Work Week” a book about entrepreneurship, self-experimentation, spirituality, psychology and also an interest in the effects of microdosing.

Ferris interview with Fadiman focused on microdosing from the book “The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide.”  After this podcast, listeners started to experiment on microdosing. They started to discuss microdosing in social media and other personal networks. A journalist also wrote about microdosing and this has increased the interest of the public all the more.

In 2016, Ayelet Waldman released a book titled: “A Really Good Day: How Microdosing Made a Mega Difference in My Mood, My Marriage, and My Life.” This book focused on the author’s 30-day use of microdosing with the drug LSD. She used this to address certain psychological issues that she has been suffering from due to menopause.

Waldman said that before she tried micro-dosing, she placed her career, marriage, and family at risk. In an interview, she recalled having a month that she felt really sad almost every day.

Nowadays, thousands of people all over the world are turning to microdosing. Whether they are treating conditions like mental health issues or enhancing creativity, microdosing on the magic mushroom is not just a trend anymore.

The science behind microdosing

Psychedelic substances are illegal and in some countries, the study of these substances are also prohibited. But in the past years, most of the top experts have made impressive progress referring to research done in the 1950s and 1960s.

Almost no study has been done on microdosing magic mushrooms that most people don’t know about what happens to the brain when you take large amounts of psychedelics. What most people know about psychedelics is that it works with serotonin, a natural chemical that stimulates the brain. Serotonin is a vital neurotransmitter found in the brain and affects all that you do, how you feel and how the brain processes any information.

Psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin in magic mushrooms have the same structure as serotonin and also works the same way. There are also several anti-depressants called SSRIs or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. These drugs make serotonin more prominent in the brain so you can feel calmer and better overall.

LCD and psilocybin work very differently by directly mimicking serotonin. This explains that one of the effects of these drugs is to affect serotonin receptors along the pre-frontal cortex. This receptor is called 5-HT2A and this leads to the following:

The creation of the “Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor” or BDNF. This is a component that enhances growth in the brain as well as brain activity and connections. There is also an increased transmission of glutamate which is a neurotransmitter important in brain functions such as cognition, memory, and learning.

The way BDNF and glutamate work together remains to be discovered but it’s clear that having an increasing amount of each in the brain leads to the benefits that we can get from microdosing. Aside from this, the two chemicals help the different regions of the brain communicate with each other.

Shrooms and LSD allow these connections to be developed by affecting the activity of the part of the brain known as the “Default Mode Network” or DMN.

The DMN is a part of the brain needed for a wide array of mental activities such as day-dreaming, recalling the past and inner reflection. There is research that says that depression is due to an overactive DMN causing overassessment and questioning the past and future.

What is a flow and why it’s important

A flow state is like riding a wave, being in perfect sync with a person or an office worker working in a seemingly in and out body experience. These are just examples of being able to perform while in the flow state.

According to experts, the flow is one of the best experiences of a person and psychedelics may be able to induce this flow state.

At present, there are no studies that prove that psychedelics used in microdoses can cause a flow state. What is only known is that moderate amounts can change the way the brain works which may be similar to being in a flow state.

Studies prove that moderate amounts of psychedelics can affect brainwaves. This can cause a shift to a more alpha oscillation seen in a flow state. Psilocybin can imitate serotonin as this is absorbed by the brain. Serotonin is present in high amounts when the brain is in a flow state.

Compared to LSD, psilocybin or psilocin interact indirectly or minimally with dopamine. This interaction is very minimal, especially in the microdose stage. Of course, it’s important to note that psychedelics can change the DMN and this permits the brain to create new connections in different areas of the brain. This is again important to enhance a flow state. Regular doses may shift the flow.

How to microdose on magic mushrooms?

A microdose when taking psychedelic mushrooms will not lead to a dramatic change in mood, mindset, and disposition. The effects will be very subtle. You need to prepare for a microdosing shrooms trip before you indulge.

Magic mushroom, in the fresh or dried form, will have different amounts of psilocybin. The different strains will also contain a variety of psilocybin contents. The different parts of the mushroom also contain different levels of psilocybin.

Having this knowledge, it’s a must that you dry a batch of magic mushroom, grind these to powder, and taking 0.1 gram of this powder as a “starter dose.”

After taking this, you can adjust the dose according to your starter dose. When you consume an amount which has made you feel some effect, go back to the dose before it. This would be the best microdose for you. Take note that the initial effect of a psilocybin trip is usually drowsiness.

When microdosing, you can use any kind of psilocybin mushroom. Check out popular strains like Psilocybe cubensis, Psilocybe azurescens, Psilocybe semilanceata, Psilocybe cyanecens, and the Panaeolus. Make sure to be aware of the amount of psilocybin in the strain you want to take and adjust your dose using microdosing.

Measure your microdose precisely. Use small empty capsules and fill these with the powder. This method will make sure that the psilocybin is evenly distributed throughout the day plus will prevent the after taste that people are not too happy about when taking shrooms.

You may also use ground magic mushroom tea. Simply dissolve the powder in hot water and add sweeteners to improve the taste. You can use honey, condensed milk or artificial sweeteners. You may add the mushroom powder to any beverage you want to drink throughout the day.

Creating your microdosing schedule

Experts have different techniques to help first-time microdosers. Dr. Fadiman suggests that the best way is to take a microdose at least once every third day. He said that the best time of the day to take a microdose of psychedelic mushrooms is during the morning. This is because your stomach is probably empty during this time and therefore you’ll be able to absorb food and medication better.

Morning doses will make you feel the effects throughout the day. This can help improve brain stimulation. And because of this stimulating effect, evening doses are not advised. Magic mushrooms may also affect sleep, therefore, you should never take a microdose at night.

Remember your “dose days.” Take a microdose on day one and rest on days two and three. Take another dose on day four.

Use a journal and write about your experience for every dose. Take note of the effects as well as negative effects.

As you continue to microdose on shrooms for many weeks, take special note of the process. Consider the short term effects as well as the long term effects especially any changes in your energy, mood, and social behavior.

The purpose of microdosing is to enhance your mood day after day. If this is your first time to microdose, take a day off from your work or school. Make sure that you don’t have any commitments the next day. Doing these will give you a chance to monitor the effects.

Also, be very vigilant in checking for any after-effects of microdosing on the days between doses. Some people who use microdosing have reported improved energy, creativity and flow.

Never take microdosing daily. Experts say that psilocybin can produce tolerance even when you take it in microdoses. This means you may soon experience poor effects in just a few days. This is one of the reasons why it’s best to take shrooms every other two days.

The benefits of microdosing on magic mushrooms can be experienced in days after a microdose and on the microdose day.  This is why you must pause for at least two days after taking another dose.

Health concerns

Another reason to space out your dose is because of the possible health concerns of daily intake of psychedelics. You are placing your cardiovascular health at risk if you take too many psychedelics in a long time. Experts are still in the dark as to how this comes to with microdosing but it’s best to avoid taking risks.

Still another disadvantage of taking a microdose every day is normalizing your dose. This is similar to drinking coffee to improve your productivity. When you take coffee daily for a long time, you must increase your dosage to be able to get the best effects. One cup can gradually turn into three to four cups of coffee in a span of two to three months.

All-in-all, it’s best to take microdoses of psychedelic mushrooms occasionally compared to a daily stimulant like coffee.

Joining microdosing retreats and events

If you are new to taking psychedelic mushrooms then even something very minimal as microdosing can be a very anxious thing. The best way to escape this anxiety is to join microdosing retreats. These are events that will help you embrace the effects of microdosing in a guided, safe and personal way.

Most retreats are led by experts. The event happens in a safe area mostly in a natural setting, free from the stress and bothers of natural city life. These can take weeks to complete because organizers believe that it can take time before a user becomes used to microdosing. Also, this gives enough time for any side effect of magic mushrooms to be exhibited.

You can find retreat like these online. Book as early as possible because this is one of the hottest ways to experience magic mushrooms.

Any advantages of microdosing?

Users microdose with magic mushrooms because of a variety of reasons. The following are the most common reasons why this is done:

Microdosing on psychedelics can reduce the intensity and the frequency of the symptoms of mental illnesses. These include depression, anxiety (generalized or social anxiety), ADD/ADHD, PTSD, mood disorders and addiction (tobacco, cocaine, opioids, and cannabis).

This method also helps increase desirable outcomes like energy, creativity, productivity, focus, flow states, improved relationships, increased empathy, athletic coordination, and leadership development.

Are there any risks of microdosing?

As much as there are many dazzling advantages of taking microdoses of magic mushrooms, there are also some negative effects.

For first time users, this can cause drowsiness, sleepiness, poor coordination, uncontrollable behaviors and so many more. Negative effects of psychedelics vary from one person to another, therefore, it’s best to take this drug moderately.

If you are not prepared for its side effects, it’s best not to take this at all. You might also want to take only the strain with the least psychedelic effects compared to a very prominent strain.

Risks of microdosing on shrooms

Micro dosing also has some risks and possibly the most dangerous is you can get in trouble for using magic mushrooms. Please check your local laws about taking magic mushrooms and the possible fines when you are caught in possession of psilocybe mushroom. Take note that in some countries, there are very strict penalties. You can go to jail or pay tough fines when you’re caught.

Psilocybin mushrooms for medical conditions

Before using magic mushrooms, understand your current mindset. If you feel stressed or anxious then you might want to wait till you’re okay before you take a dose. If you plan to use microdosing to help you with a medical condition talk to your doctor.

Microdosing on shrooms can cause a manic state and this can only worsen existing conditions. And because there is no research on the safety of microdosing with magic mushrooms especially for a long time, avoid this drug indefinitely. Some patients who have micro-dosed on shrooms have experienced heart problems.

What is the best way to get magic mushrooms for microdosing?

Psilocybin mushrooms are not available for sale online or offline. The only way to get some is to grow your own using a grow kit. A grow kit has all the things you need: a substrate with mycelium, a grow bag and some clips. Just spray water and keep the kit in a dark and humid environment.

In a matter of days, this kit will grow your mushrooms and when your shrooms are ready, you can harvest them. There are other, more sophisticated ways to grow your supply of shrooms and most use a spore syringe.

You may also explore your surroundings to look for wild mushrooms. This is possible if you live in an area where these strains are prevalent.

If you are located in Europe, you can purchase Psilocybin truffles which are legal in New Zealand. And since truffles are less potent than magic mushrooms, your starter dose is around 0.5 grams of dried powder.

A few easy recipes for magic mushroom chocolates

microdosing mushroom chocolate

Here is an easy recipe to make magic mushroom chocolates. This recipe makes use of rich chocolate which can be in chocolate bar form or raw chocolate chunks or powder. Chocolates are the ideal way to microdose because these can be cut in small pieces.

It’s also easy to hide magic mushrooms inside chocolate bars. You could be dosing and tripping on magic mushrooms using chocolates and no one would suspect! Chocolates are also very sweet, even the darkest chocolate kinds are still deliciously sweet. This sweetness will hide the bitter and icky taste of magic mushrooms.

But before we prepare a magic mushroom chocolate bar, remember not to mix magic mushrooms with other drugs. Don’t sneak in dried cannabis in the recipe. Never take higher doses than what is provided to you. If you must use microdosing, start this as early as possible.

When taking magic mushrooms, never take this alone. You must have a trusted person nearby if this your first time to use shrooms.

Use shrooms naturally

Experts say that mixing magic mushrooms with food or drinks should be your last resort. It’s always best to eat shrooms as natural as possible. This is because psilocybin should be efficiently absorbed by the body.

When you take magic shrooms with food, it can diminish the effect of psilocybin or you may not experience this at all. But if you detest the taste and the smell of shrooms then you can always use chocolate

Simple magic mushroom chocolate

What you’ll need

  • A bar of milk chocolate
  • A starter dose of dry shrooms (about 1.5 grams or less)
  • Silicone mold or ice cube tray

  1. Divide the milk chocolate into portions. Take a column and place this in a small glass bowl.
  2. Melt the chocolate in the microwave. Place the heat in the lowest and do this carefully. Take note that chocolate may burn quickly in the microwave oven so be vigilant.

If you don’t have a microwave, use a water bath method. Heat water in a pan and let this boil. Turn off the stove and place the glass dish in the middle of the hot pan and melt your chocolate. Use a spatula to make sure that all the chocolates have melted.

  1. Use a fine grinder to grind the magic mushrooms to the best consistency. You may use an herb grinder for this.
  2. Place a dose of the magic mushrooms in one of the mold.
  3. Let the chocolate cool but don’t let it turn hard.
  4. Pour the chocolate into the molds.
  5. Place the mold inside the fridge and let this solidify. It would take an hour for your delicious chocolates to be ready.
  6. After an hour, take these out of the freezer and eat them.

  • Place the tray in the freezer for another five or ten minutes.
  • As the chocolate is in the freezer, you may now make the chocolate shell. Combine the bittersweet chocolate and semisweet chocolates in a small bowl.
  • Take the chocolate balls and drop these in the melted chocolate.
  • Then, roll these in sprinkles, cocoa powder or coconut. You may use any kind of topping or coating that you prefer.
  • Place the finished truffles inside the freezer to harden completely.

After making mushroom chocolates or truffles, place your finished products in a well-sealed container. Chocolates last for a long time which is why you can keep your stash forever as long as you preserve these in the refrigerator.
